Memorial Day is one week away with its tradition of barbecues and family get-togethers to kick off the traditional summer season. This also means The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will ramp up its annual “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt mobilization, to take place from May 19th thru May 26th. The motivating factor behind this annual awareness campaign remains to save lives. Throughout the nation, Law Enforcement authorities will be on the lookout for motorists that have not taken advantage of the single most effective life-saving, injury preventing device to ever be installed in a motor vehicle: the lap/shoulder seatbelt.
During the enforcement campaign, Officers write seat belt tickets to persuade unbuckled motorists to take advantage of all of the safety features built into their vehicles. They tell us that they would rather write the ticket than call EMS to assist an injured motorist or knock on a family’s door to tell them a loved one won’t be coming home.
With consideration to all of the safety technology available in today’s automobile, the simple seatbelt remains the most proven method to insure the safety of the occupants of a motor vehicle. NHTSA research indicates states with primary enforcement laws, have a higher seatbelt use rate than states where seatbelt use is considered a secondary offense. NHTSA estimates in 2012, seatbelts saved 12,174 lives, and nearly 63,000 lives in the five year period from 2008 – 2012. Seatbelt use increased to 87% in 2013. This is unchanged statistically from the 86% recorded in 2012.
Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) otherwise known as Air Bags are just as described, supplemental. This means SRS systems are designed to supplement seatbelt use.
Always wear your seatbelt and insist on your passengers doing the same. Additionally, children should always be secured in a correctly installed child restraint located in the rear seat.
